Within the city of Spokane there were 199,630 people comprising 81,512 households and 47,276 families as of the 2000 census. The density of the population was 3.387 people/sq. mile. There were 87,941 housing units with an average density of 1,523/sq. mile.
Ethnicity
The most recent ethnic percentages are 82.59% White, 3.24% Multiracial, 4.50% Hispanic, 2.56% Asian, 3.02% African American, 2.18% Native American, 1.00% from other races 0.90% Pacific Islander. 20.7% were of German, 10.8% Irish, 9.6% English, 6.8% United States or American and 5.8% Norwegian ancestry according to Census 2000. Ukrainian, Russian and other eastern European immigrants make up around 4% of the White population.
Households

Population Growth
The population of Spokane has seen a rapid increase since around 2005. This is largely due to the strong job market and low cost of living.
